About This Project
Healthcare professionals must adhere to the highest quality standards of care, practice and professional ethics. Global healthcare organization, Infusion Nurses Society (INS), is dedicated to the delivery of quality infusion therapy and maintaining stringent standards of practice and professional ethics. Nursing schools and other facilities approached INS numerous times requesting more knowledge and experience with infusion therapy. INS sought a way to deliver fundamental training courses for nursing students and clinicians early in their career and already engaged in the practice of infusion therapy.
Solutions
The Fundamentals of Infusion Therapy (FIT) Program is a web-based, interactive learning experience that addresses the needs of clinicians and nursing students who have limited practical application of infusion therapy, as well as clinicians in need of a refresher.
The course utilizes interactive videos that help learners determine the correct actions, assessments, and decisions required for accurate and effective infusion therapy. Activities are based on a hypothetical patient, their history, and images of their veins shown in a simulation. Through the training the learner sees the impact of their decisions on a patient’s care. The training exercises simulate the actions and behaviors required by clinicians before, during, and after infusion therapy. FIT also tackles the learner’s gaps in current infusion therapy knowledge, engages critical thinking skills, and helps build confidence in job performance.
Results
Upon completion of the FIT program, the clinician should:
- Have increased confidence and knowledge of infusion therapy best practices
- Be able to employ infusion therapy best practices to safeguard patient safety
- Recognize complications and appropriately intervene according to infusion therapy standards of practice
