Beyond the Page-Turner: Elevating Learning Through Storyline
November 4, 2025
With over 40 years of experience in the business, we know eLearning like the back of our hands. But did you know that learning leaders these days may be missing out on critical innovation opportunities using tools they already have access to?
At AllenComm, we work with every major authoring tool on the market — including our own tool, DesignLab. However, after we uncovered the hidden potential of the Articulate Suite, we’ve been looking at things from a new perspective.
Storyline itself is a highly powerful tool that’s prevalent in L&D today, and Articulate Rise has also continued to expand its uses with new opportunities to inject innovation and better scalability into learning for greater impact. It was a no brainer to focus more of our design innovation on pushing these tools to new limits.
And we do it because our clients deserve more than another page-turner. They deserve learning that expands what’s possible, moves people, changes minds, and drives results.
Why Storyline? Why Now?
Storyline has rich historical roots in the L&D industry. There’s no doubt that it has already served our industry well, and many studies show its evolution from a PowerPoint-based building block to an immersive learning experience.
It can create learning that’s emotionally resonant, that becomes a canvas for creativity — a playground for branching scenarios, storytelling arcs, and seamless transitions. It’s the difference between “training” and “transformation.” And it’s these focus points that enable innovation and allow our customers to do more with less.
And Articulate continues to deliver on its promise to streamline collaboration, reduce costs, build workplace training that’s accessible for all learners, and more with the addition of Articulate Rise, Storyline’s sleek, user-friendly sibling. Rise embraces the mobile-first desires many leaders in our industry carry, which comes with many benefits but also, unfortunately, occasional limitations as well.
But every authoring tool comes with its own limitations. It’s how we work within those limitations that matters most.
The Limitations of eLearning Authoring Tools
Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common tools leaders use today. What makes them different? What strengths does each tool have? What potential weaknesses? We created a guide to help you easily visualize the answers to these questions.

At AllenComm, we strive to keep learning innovative and fresh — and this is where Storyline truly shines. We don’t just use it to construct a course. We use it to build a story.
The AllenComm Approach: Using Storyline to Build a Story
When clients come to AllenComm, they’re not looking for another vendor. They’re looking for a partner: a creative force that can elevate their learning beyond the ordinary. From templates to new libraries, and all the inbetween that requires us to work around the limitations above, we craft experiences that:
- Enable performance-first design. We start from measurable job outcomes. Then, we design interactions that practice the exact decisions learners face in real life using nuanced scenarios, diagnostic pathways, and learning activities tied to KPIs (such as quality, time-to-proficiency, or error rate).
- Personalize for an audience at scale. We build audience paths (like novice vs. expert, employee vs. manager) using Storyline variables, question banks, and conditional triggers, so each learner sees the most relevant content and practice, not generic activities.
- Gather comprehensive learning data (not just engagement = completion). We can use Storyline with xAPI to capture number of attempts, choices, confidence ratings, remediation loops, and referencing resources that can be rolled up to dashboards or a client’s LMS/LRS. This data can help optimize and correlate with performance KPIs.
- Design craft that elevates each client’s standard. We create custom components and activities, UX/UI visual systems, and interaction patterns based on a client’s brand (without a stocky template look). These reusable master libraries can be used for future courses, which establishes a consistent, stunning visual treatment that connects learners with the brand from their first module and beyond.
- Achieve speed + scale without sacrificing quality. Large projects can feel overwhelming without the right plan in place. We take the overwhelm out of the equation so leaders can focus on what matters. We achieve this by pairing a sprint-based workflow with SME enablement, including deliverable and review options to scale the development, keep large curricula consistent, and maintain open, collaborative communication channels at every step.
- Make content accessible to meet a diverse range of learner needs. Every learner deserves a chance to learn in a way that’s most impactful for them — without feeling left behind. We design to meet WCAG 2.2 AA compliance, with keyboard-only flows, transcripts, contrast-checked palettes, descriptive alt text, focus order, and screen-reader testing components.
- Attain roll-out readiness. There’s more to delivery than just finishing development. We assist with security reviews, vendor documentation, SCORM/xAPI packaging, SSO/LMS integration, localization pipelines (multi-language), and even post-launch support and warranty to ensure clients are set up for long-term success.
Let’s look at a couple of examples.
Case Study 1: New Brand Training — Building on Storyline’s Capabilities to Create a More Accessible, Mobile-Friendly Design
One of Storyline’s limitations is its responsiveness and mobile functionality. We understand this well, which is why with every project, we work closely with our clients to decide on the right tool for the job based on their highest priorities.
Sometimes, that involves being creative with Storyline’s capabilities — and using other authoring tools, either alone or in tandem with each other — to achieve each client’s goals and objectives however we can, without sacrificing the learner experience to do it.
For example: A manufacturing client wanted a health and safety course for a young, tech-savvy workforce. They needed a mobile-first design, but they were working with text-heavy scripts and a brand still in development. It was a difficult challenge, to be sure. So, we decided to flip the script.
We analyzed their infrastructure, came up with a plan to adapt our available tools to their needs, and worked with key decision makers to establish a way forward. We helped them innovate in ways they hadn’t thought of yet to enhance engagement, introduce mobile-friendly, simulated activities, and, ultimately, bring the project to life.
Case Study 2: Developing People Skills with Branching Scenarios for Security Professionals
Here’s another example: A client in the security sector needed to train professionals in critical thinking and people skills. It would be easy to build another linear course to add to their catalog. But AllenComm doesn’t just aim for what’s simplest. We aim for what’s most effective in meeting clients’ goals based on what they need now, what they need tomorrow, the resources they have available, and their unique timeline.
There was a twist to this project, however: The client wanted regular updates and the ability to maintain the courses themselves. We understand that maintenance is important to our clients, and we embrace that mindset. We don’t want to be just another vendor. We want to be a true partner that shares in each client’s success. We want to help these leaders create a foundation for their learning, and then equip them with the skills, confidence, and support they need to expand on the learning and maintain it moving forward.
So, how did we achieve that kind of partnership with this client? We used Storyline’s customizable templates, AI-powered image generation, and persona-driven audio to create deeply personalized, branching scenarios with consequential feedback. These courses aligned with the client’s existing Rise courses, transforming their learning into a full ecosystem with a standardized tone and style.
We used Storyline as a creative platform to allow security professionals to practice real-world decision-making in a risk-free environment, with feedback that mattered. The learning was self-directed, the scenarios were based on world-building and storytelling, and the client’s team could maintain and evolve the courses over time because of how we built, delivered, and trained their team on the final solution.
And it doesn’t stop there. Over the last few years, AllenComm has continued to invest in new technologies to better equip our client partners with what they need to drive innovation, impact, and scale using AI.
Using AI to Do More, Faster
Many of our partners are interested in using AI but have hesitations about where to start or what to do. We help them begin with one of the most important steps: establishing an effective governance structure unique to their organization.
For leaders who are hesitant to use AI, here’s some advice. AI is not a replacement for creativity. It’s an accelerant. It amplifies what’s possible. From generating images and sound effects to streamlining development cycles in Storyline, AI is the secret weapon for learning leaders who want to stay ahead of the curve.
Let’s Build a New Story — Together
The future of learning is not about technology. It’s about creativity, partnership, and boldness. It’s about working together to break free from limitations, embrace new ways of thinking and innovation, and building a story that resonates with learners and achieves measurable results for your business.
We’d love to be part of your story. Connect with us today for a free consultation about how we can use Storyline to create something unforgettable.
